found my grandpas canon ae-1 in a closet and it still works

so i was helping clear out my grandpas closet and there was a canon ae-1 just sitting in a bag. it fires and the light meter needle still moves?? im 16 and have never shot film in my life so i have zero clue what im looking at
what film do i put in it for a first roll that wont bankrupt me. something forgiving pls. gonna be shooting random stuff around my neighborhood and probably my dog

Best possible camera to learn on, that thing is a tank. Put a cheap color 200 or 400 in it, shoot in decent light, and take a second to read the meter before each shot.Also check the battery. The ae-1 needs a little 4LR44 and if the meter needle is moving youre probably fine, but they do die and then the whole camera gets weird.4jojo-rewindcity on Jun 2, 2026(edited)
