Indoor shots come out grainy and muddy, outdoor is fine

shooting 400 speed. outside everything looks clean, inside it all goes grainy and kind of brown and sad. is that just the film being too slow for indoor light or am i messing something else up

    Indoor light is way dimmer than your eye thinks it is, your eye is compensating and the film cannot. So a 400 gets underexposed, and underexposed negative film goes grainy and muddy in the shadows, which is the brown sad look youre describing. Options are an 800 speed for indoors, a flash, or shooting next to a big window during the day.
